Starbucks City Tumblers

I collect Starbucks Global Icon Series tumblers. To date, I have a total of 14 SB tumblers in my collection.

My SB tumbler collection

The idea of collecting SB city tumblers started during my Singapore & Bintan, Indonesia trip in April 2013.

I was on my way to the boarding gate for my flight back to Manila when I passed by one SB store and decided to get myself a cup of hot latte. I was already in line to order when I saw the display of mugs, tumblers, etc. I decided to take a closer look at the display. Then it hit me right that moment to have SB city tumblers as tangible collection from the international cities I have been. I got myself a 'Singapore' tumbler and paid immediately before I even do the currency conversion (from SGD to PHP, haha!). And luckily, my hot latte became free with the tumbler purchase. Yey!

I had to work back on the earlier cities I have been since 2009. I'm very fortunate to know frequent travelers like me (friends and colleagues) who are currently in or about to go to those cities.

PS. I only collect international city tumblers. Posts are arranged chronologically based on the time I visited them.

Tumbler No. 1 - HK in June 2009 (top right) &
March 2014 (bottom right)
This tumbler was given to me by Thet Esposito from her trip to HK in April 2013.

Tumbler No. 2 - Singapore in March 2010 (top right) &
April 2013 (bottom right)
I bought this tumbler at the departure area of Changi Airport during my April 2013 trip.

Tumbler No. 3 - Kuala Lumpur in 2010
This tumbler was from Mai Maxino during her trip to KL in May 2013. I personally requested her to buy me one. Lucky me!

Tumbler No. 4 - Taipei in March 2011
Got this from Grace Cincochan. Actually it was not her who bought this one, but her sis-in-law. Haha!

Tumbler No. 5 - Bangkok in July 2011
Special thanks to April Avenir. She visited at least 4 SB stores in Bangkok just to buy me my tumbler. Apparently, both Bangkok and Thailand are not available during her trip in Sept. 2013. And even during Chris Banaag's visit in Nov 2013. So, she just got me this one. Pattaya is another city in Thailand. Still, thanks for the efforts guys!

Tumbler No. 6 - Seoul in November 2011
Also from April Avenir during her recent trip to Seoul this March 2014. It is not the global icon series but still, I included it to my collection. This one is the Seoul City Night limited edition tumbler.

Tumbler No. 7 - Vietnam in August 2013
The second tumbler I personally bought. Since starbucks opened its stores in Vietnam only in January, they are yet to have the city tumbler so I bought the country first. Hopefully, they would already have one in time for my second visit to HCMC in July of this year. Bought this one at the SB store near New World Hotel.

Tumbler No. 8 - Beijing in November 2013
Ever since I was a little girl during history class, I had dreamed of the Great Wall of China. I was so privileged to have climbed the Joyongguan side. We were supposed to take the Badalling side but unfortunately the cable car was not working at that time. Got this from one of the SB stores in Wangfujing shopping street.

Tumbler No. 9 - Beijing, China in November 2013
Since I still have a few CNY when I passed by the SB store at the departure area of Beijing Airport, I decided to get myself the country tumbler. With the intention of actually using it. But as with the others, I can not take to use it. Instead, I placed it in the shelf beside the Beijing tumbler.

Tumbler No. 10 - Dubai in January 2014
I consider my UAE trip as my greatest, so far. Up to now I still can't believe I actually went there. Hahaha! As if it was just a dream. Bought the SB tumbler at the first store I saw at Mirdiff City Center.

Tumbler No. 11 - Abu Dhabi in February 2014
That's me wearing 'Abaya' at Sheik Zayid Mosque. It was such a fascinating sight and so huge that we were not able to look around. It is the largest mosque in UAE.

Tumbler No. 12 - Macau in March 2014
Bought two tumblers, for myself and for a friend. Good thing the tumblers came with two free drinks of my choice.

Tumbler No. 13 - Paris &
Tumbler No. 14 - London
These two are the only cities I haven't been to in my collection. But I still requested for these anyway from Juliet Dytoc during her trip last February 2014. Hoping I get to visit both cities soon.

How about you? What do you collect after every trip?

NOTE: I am still in need of Bangkok or Thailand, and Indonesia SB tumblers.

My 'DIY' Travels

As promised, I am posting my practical tips for my 'do-it-yourself' travels. All these are applicable to me but may not be for others. Nevertheless, I hope it is still worth sharing.

AIRFARE

All my travels started with airline seat sale promo. There was a time were I am so into viewing websites in search for promo airfares. My objective is to book the airfare at a cheap price. The rates are relatively cheaper if booked in advance. If I see a seat sale, my mind works instantly. I search for the places I want to visit with my preferred dates. It's really a ' trial and error' and 'try and try until you succeed' thing. If it doesn't work, I try to adjust and search for another combination. If it still doesn't work, I DO NOT BOOK. I know I can find another promo some other time

TIP: Take advantage of seat sale and promo airfares. If you don't find anything now, you may find something later. Be patient and alert for the next seat sale. For faster booking, I have an account with the airline company which I often use. Usually the tickets I book are at least 6 months advance and others go as far as more than 1 year before the actual travel dates.

Just to give you an idea, here are some of the roundtrip airfares I booked which I think are great deals:

1. Php 97 Manila to CDO
2. Php 3,400 Manila to Incheon, Korea
3. Php 2,700 Manila to Taipei, Taiwan
4. Php 12,000 Manila to Dubai

ACCOMMODATION

Finding where to stay can be really taxing. You'll have to consider a lot in selecting one among all the list coming from your researches. Here are the factors I consider in selecting mine, arranged from the most to the least important.

1. Price

At the end of the day, it is the price that matters. Personally, I prefer to stay at cheaper places since most of the travel time are spent outside. My philosophy, I can stay in fancy hotels here in the Manila where I can enjoy and maximize the facilities. But when traveling, I want to explore more of the place rather than the comfort of a bed. For me, I just need a decent, clean, and safe place to crash, freshen up and that's it. My search goes from 3 star hotels and below to guesthouse, inns, bed and breakfast, hostels, etc.

2. Location

This is the second important thing I consider. I want an accesible location, near the train/metro/mrt station or at least a bus stop or a shopping area. When traveling especially abroad, mobility is the key. It saves a lot on time and money if you stay somewhere strategically located.

3. Reviews

I read reviews from booking sites and other travel blogs. Here, I get to have the real experiences of people who already went and stayed there. I compare different reviews I read because an opinion of one may differ from another. But if the complied reviews are more on the negative, I delist it among my selection. Just take note reviews are subjective and still, trust your instinct in selecting where to stay.

I normally use different hotel booking sites like agoda, booking.com, hotelsclub, hotelscombined, asiarooms and even hostelclub, hostel.com, etc., where I can compare prices.

Then I research for the hotel's location. Here, I access the hotel's official website, if they have, and also use google maps. It is important for me to determine the hotel's exact location, and to know how near/far is this to my places of interest.

Next, I read reviews. If all 3 are okay with me, I proceed with the reservation. Else, I repeat steps no. 1  to 3 until I've come to choose again...and again...and again...until I selected the right one (for me).

Lastly when I finally decided on one, I search again using the different hotel booking sites versus the hotel's official website, to check for the cheapest price available. I am also on the look-up as some credit card companies have promos and discounted rates on certain booking sites depending on the travel period and location (country/city).

TOURS

What to do; where and how to go; where and what to eat; are among the basic things I research after booking a flight. These things come in handy especially for 'DIY' travelers like me. Given that travel time is limited, it is a constant effort to maximize each visit and spend it wisely. When organizing my itinerary, I group all places and activities of my interests according to their location. I also research on how to go from one place to another, citing different mode of transpo. This is to avoid getting lost along the way and wasting the "precious" travel time on finding my way back. Personally, I don't wanna look to "touristy".

This is also when blogs from other travel bloggers come useful. Their insights give me an idea whether an attraction or activity is worthwhile. It helps me decide on my final itinerary given the limited travel time.

I am more of the nature, sights and theme parks rather than historic, museum kind of place.

Listing the price of entrance fees, fares, and other travel expenses are also done in this part.

In my final itinerary, I list down all the following:
1. Date and time of visit
2. Number of minutes/hours allocated
3. Place of Interest
4. What to do
5. Cost on entrance fee/fare
6. How to go
7. Mode of transpo

Remember, the more you save on airfare and hotel means you'll have more budget for tours, food, and shopping :-)

BUDGET

Having done all my researches, I am now ready to set my budget, how much money would I need for the trip (food, shopping, transpo, etc.). This is not much of a problem since I already jot down all the fixed and estimated costs in the initial part of planning. A ballpark figure will do as it is quite hard to get the exact figures. I also bring extra for miscellaneous and contingency expenses.

HERE ARE MY TIPS:

I make payments to my travel expense on a staggered basis. First is the airline. Given that airline booking is done months before the actual trip via credit card, payment is also done in advance. No sweat!

Second, the hotel. I strategically decide on when to make the online hotel booking. This is to make sure that the payment will be due at least a month or two after the actual trip. Some credit card companies also offer to charge the amount on a later day. I take advantage of this to extend the payment due date.

Third is the pocket money for tours, food, etc. Having estimated the costs of everything during the research stage, I already have an idea how much to bring. I still have few months to prepare. Just the right attitude in saving for something greater is my key.

All big ticket purchases and unplanned expenses like pasalubong for family, shopping for myself, etc. are usually charged to my credit card. This way these purchases won't hurt my allocated pocket money for the trip.

Lastly, I exchange in the country's local currency using Php few days before the trip. The amount corresponds to my allocated budget. And I also bring few USD in case my pocket money is not enough. USD are widely accepted for exchange in all banks and money changers abroad.

NOTE:
I pay everything charged on my credit card before it comes due. It is not advisable to have revolving balances on credit card as they charge high interest rates. If you do it this way, it outweighs the benefit of having a credit card since you'll be paying more than the price of the actual purchase.

MY BIG NOTE:
Don't spend beyond your means. Traveling can be really tempting because you might have thoughts like, "This is a once and a lifetime opportunity", "I don't know when and if I can come back again", etc. Remember, traveling is just a quick escape from reality and you will always go back to where you came from.

Happy traveling!

First entry

Want to know how I did Dubai and Abu Dhabi in 10 days? Read this.

Since this is my first blog entry, I’ll start with my most recent trip.

AIRFARE: It started with Cebu Pacific’s “Love you so March” airfare promo on March 2013. I bought round trip tickets Manila-Dubai for travel on January to February 2014 at Php11,942.46. The fare is already inclusive of baggage allowance of 15kgs Manila to Dubai and 20kgs Dubai to Manila; and 1 serving of hot meals in both flights. This is a very good deal considering that usual round trip tickets to Dubai costs around Php35k and up.

Since this trip was almost one year in preparation, I had ample time to prepare my budget on airfare, hotel accommodation, visa fee and pocket money.

VISA: A friend of mine who has been working in Dubai for nine years helped me in my visit visa application. She just asked for a colored scanned copy of my passport and there, after four days I got a message from her that my visa has been approved. She got me the 14-day visit visa since I am staying for only 10 days. I heard it costs less than the usual 30-day visit visa, but I don’t know the actual fee because she did not let me pay for the visa fee. Yey!

ACCOMMODATION: I really had a struggle with this because hotels in UAE, especially in Dubai, are relatively expensive (actually not just the hotel but almost everything is pricey in Dubai). I used different booking sites like agoda, booking.com, hotelclub, hotelscombined, asiarooms, etc. This task gave me a lot of headache for some days. Finally, I was able to book through asiarooms and booking.com.

First 3 nights – Dubai Youth Hotels, Dubai @ Php3,1++ per night

Second 2 nights – Al Diar Mina Hotel, Abu Dhabi @ Php3,2++ per night
Our room at Al Diar Mina Hotel
Third 3 nights – Ramee Guestline Hotel, Dubai @ Php4,1++ per night
Our room at Ramee Guestline Hotel

For the tours, that same friend bought a Dubai Entertainer booklet, known for its “buy one get one free” voucher. This is really a great buy. The vouchers are valid from Jan 1, 2014 to Dec. 31, 2014 so it is not so advisable to buy if only staying for a few days. If I remembered it right, this one costs 395AED and again, I paid nothing.

You also what to travel on a budget? Here are a few tips:

  1. Plan ahead – With all the seat sale promos, I really save a lot of money on airfare. Just be flexible on the travel dates.
  2. Research – In this generation, almost all we need to know are just a few clicks away. After I booked my airfare, I research on what to do, where to stay, what to eat, things to do, etc.
  3. Budget – Having done my researches, I am able to allocate a budget for the trip. Since the payments for everything is on a staggered basis (airfare paid months ahead, hotels are booked using credit card which is payable in a month or two after the trip), I prepared my pocket money which is in cold cash.
  4. Lastly, keep a positive attitude and stay flexible. Just enjoy the place and the experiences you’ll get.

I’ll share the day to day itinerary of my UAE trip in my next post.
